Gen Z wave in Nepal: Political upheaval from Balen Shah

Nepal’s politics has seen a tremendous display of youth power, where Balen Shah’s Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) defeated the traditional parties by securing almost two-thirds majority in the recent elections. After the restoration of democracy in 2008, parties like Nepali Congress, Maoist Center and UML dominated, whose leaders Sherbahadur Deuba, Prachanda and KP Sharma Oli made the country a victim of instability in the web of alliances.

Balen Shah, an engineer and rapper, entered politics by becoming Kathmandu mayor in 2022. Without the support of any political family or organization, he ran an issue-focused campaign. In Nepal rife with ethnic-regional divisions, this mandate proves that powerful issues can unite people.

For the first time, coalition politics is coming to an end with a party getting a clear majority. The opposition will now have to play the true opposition role. In South Asia, on the lines of Bangladesh-Sri Lanka, such a movement is possible in Pakistan and Maldives also. Nepal is ready to touch new heights under the leadership of Balen.
