New Delhi. The value of the Indian rupee has reached its lowest level in 78 years since the country’s independence in 1947. Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress party leader Supriya Shrinet wrote on the post, “Congratulations!”

During the 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign, then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had launched sharp attacks on the Congress government over the falling rupee. He had said that the rupee falls only in the country whose Prime Minister has fallen. Modi had argued that this is the weakness of the government. He had said that the currency of Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan is not falling, but the Indian rupee is falling, which is the failure of the government.
Alleging governance failure, Modi had said that when the rupee was around ₹55-60, its fall was a sign of economic mismanagement. By making it a major election issue, he had promised that with the coming of the BJP government, the value of the rupee will stabilize and the respect of the country will increase. He had also said that if black money comes back from abroad, then with the strengthening of the rupee, a huge amount will come into the account of every poor person.
