Central government’s decision, great news for railway employees

New Delhi. A big relief news has come out for the railway employees. The Central Government has approved 25% increase in Kilometerage Allowance (KMA) given to the running staff of Railways. This decision will directly increase the income of lakhs of employees, especially loco pilots, guards and other running staff.

What is this new decision?

Under this decision of the government, the KMA given to the running staff will be increased by 25 percent. This allowance is given to those employees who are involved in train operations and travel frequently. Since they do not get normal TA/DA, KMA forms an important part of their income.

benefits to employees

Loco pilots, train guards and employees engaged in other running duties will benefit the most from this increase. These employees are engaged in train operations day and night, hence increase in their allowances has been a long pending demand.

Why is KMA important?

Kilometer allowance is actually given on per kilometer basis. There is also a minimum guarantee along with it, so that even when covering short distances, employees can get the fixed minimum payment. This is why this allowance forms a major part of their total salary.

When will the increased benefits be available?

It is expected that employees will start getting increased KMA from April. That is, its effect will be visible only with the salary of April, which will directly increase the monthly income of the employees.

How much will it affect the salary?

A 25% increase in KMA means an increase in employees’ income by thousands of rupees. For example, if an employee was earlier getting Rs 10,000 KMA, now it may increase to around Rs 12,500. However, the actual increase will depend on the distance the employee travels in a month.

Response of employee organizations

Employee organizations have called this decision a big achievement. Shiv Gopal Mishra, General Secretary of All India Railwaymen’s Federation, has called it a victory for long standing demands. He says that after continuous talks and efforts, the government has taken this positive step.

Hint related to 8th Pay Commission

This decision has come at a time when discussions are intense regarding the 8th Pay Commission. It is believed that this increase in KMA could be a sign of major pay reforms to come. Especially when dearness allowance reaches around 50%, the demand for revision in allowances also increases.
