Martinez Cocktail Recipe

A timeless classic, the Martinez is often considered the missing link between the Manhattan and the Martini. It’s smooth, slightly sweet, and aromatic—perfect for those who enjoy a refined, spirit-forward drink.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz Old Tom gin (or London Dry gin for a drier version)

  • 1 1/2 oz sweet vermouth

  • 1/4 oz maraschino liqueur

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters (or orange bitters)

  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Chill the glass
Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill.

  2. Mix the drink
In a mixing glass, add gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and bitters.

  3. Add ice and stir
Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir gently for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled.

  4. Strain and serve
Discard ice from the chilled glass and strain the cocktail into it.

Garnish

  • Lemon twist (express the oils over the drink)
    or

  • Maraschino cherry

Tips

  • Use Old Tom gin for a more traditional, slightly sweeter profile.

  • Stirring (not shaking) keeps the drink clear and silky.

  • Adjust maraschino liqueur slightly if you prefer more or less sweetness.

Flavor Profile

The Martinez offers a balanced blend of botanical gin, rich vermouth, subtle sweetness, and aromatic bitters, creating a smooth and elegant cocktail with a hint of complexity.

Serving Suggestion

Serve chilled as a pre-dinner drink or a sophisticated evening cocktail. Perfect for those who appreciate classic mixology and nuanced flavors.
