Beginning of a new chapter of politics in Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul elected PM…
Thailand’s House of Representatives on Thursday elected 59-year-old Anutin Charnvirakul as the country’s new Prime Minister. Anutin secured this prestigious post by 293 votes in the parliamentary voting after the general elections on 8 February.
Let us tell you, Anutin’s party, Bhumjaithai Party, had won 191 seats in the 500-member House of Representatives, and he, along with an alliance of 16 parties, won 292 seats. His opponent, Natthaphong Ruengpanyavut of the People’s Party, received 119 votes. At the same time, 86 MPs stayed away from voting, which emerged as an important aspect of this election.
Let us tell you, Anutin entered politics in 2001 after joining the government of billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra. However, in 2007, Thaksin’s party was dissolved on court order, and Anutin was banned from politics for five years. In 2012, he returned to politics as the leader of Bhumjaithai Party.
Anutin’s father, Chavarat Charnvirakul, started the Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Company, which worked on projects such as fencing of US military sites in Thailand, but it later became a large construction firm.
In his first term, Anutin will have to face many important and sensitive issues. In 2022, there was a violent conflict on the border of Thailand and Cambodia, which affected the entire region. Anutin will get an opportunity to calm these conflicts and make proper use of the parliamentary majority.
Despite all these political troubles, Anutin’s election will bring a new opportunity for Thailand, where he is committed to strengthening his government.
