India secures 2028 Global Athletics event – Tezzbuzz

New Delhi, Mar 20: India has secured hosting rights for the 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships, marking a significant step in its push to position itself as a global sporting destination. The decision was confirmed by World Athletics following a council meeting.

The event will be staged at the Kalinga Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar, a venue that has rapidly developed into one of India’s premier multi-sport hubs. The facility, part of the larger Kalinga Stadium Complex, is among the few dedicated indoor athletics venues in the country.

According to Athletics Federation of India president Bahadur Singh Sagoo, the successful bid follows multiple inspections, including a recent visit by a World Athletics delegation earlier this year. The venue is also set to host the inaugural National Indoor Championships, a move aimed at building competitive readiness ahead of the global event.

This will be India’s first major global athletics hosting assignment in over two decades, with the last being the World Half-Marathon Championships in 2004. The 2028 event is expected to test not just infrastructure, but also India’s ability to deliver at an elite international standard.

The same venue is also in contention to host the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in 2028, further underlining Odisha’s growing importance in India’s sports ecosystem.

While securing hosting rights is a strong statement of intent, execution will be the real challenge. Delivering a seamless global event will determine whether India can transition from an emerging host to a reliable one on the international athletics stage.
