‘As long as I am there, personal achievements…’, to whom did Gautam Gambhir give a message after winning the World Cup?

Indian cricket team’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has always been taking on players who boast of their personal success. Now after winning the T20 World Cup, he has again said that he will not talk about personal achievements as long as he is there. Gambhir, who has faced criticism many times for speaking his mind very clearly, says that he is answerable only to the 30 people in the dressing room. Gautam Gambhir, the coach of the Indian team, which won the T20 World Cup for the second consecutive time, has said that the trophy should be celebrated instead of achievements.

When India won its third T20 World Cup title by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs, all the players of the team called it a joint effort of the team. Gautam Gambhir, who opposed the hero culture, clearly said that the purpose of team game is to win trophies, not to score individual runs. He has also praised captain Surya Kumar Yadav that he and Surya have the same opinion in this regard.

Gambhir wants team games

Gautam Gambhir said, ‘I think my conversation with Surya has always been that achievements do not matter. Trophies matter. For a very long time in Indian cricket we have been talking about achievements and I hope that as long as I am there we will not talk about achievements. Stop celebrating achievements, celebrate trophies. This is important because the larger objective of a team sport is to win trophies, not to score individual runs. It never mattered to me and never will.

Gambhir further said, ‘I have been very lucky that Suriya and I have the same opinion, especially in this matter.’ Even though Gautam Gambhir did not take anyone’s name, it is being linked to Dhoni’s performance in the 2011 World Cup final match. In that final match, Gambhir had scored 97 runs but the last six was hit by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Regarding this, Gambhir has openly said many times that one six does not win the match.

Highly praised Sanju Samson

Praising Sanju Samson, Gautam Gambhir has said that he is the best example of team game. He has said, ‘You can see what Sanju did in the last three matches. 97, 89 and 89 not out. Imagine, if you were playing for some achievement, we might not have been able to reach 250 runs, so I think this is for you guys too.

In the last two years, it has been seen that he was praised less for India’s victories and almost every time he was criticized for his failures. Criticism on social media also made his path difficult but Gambhir does not care about the opinions of those watching from outside. On this, Gambhir has said, ‘I am not accountable to any social media. My accountability is mostly towards those 30 people who are sitting in the dressing room. Even though I have won two ICC trophies as a coach, it does not matter because in the future I feel that those 30 people matter the most to me in my coaching tenure, no one else matters.
