Differences in Congress exposed, Tharoor-Tiwari support Center on West Asia policy!

On one hand, the Congress party is continuously criticizing the central government regarding the increasing tension between Iran, Israel and America in West Asia, while on the other hand, two party MPs Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tiwari supported India’s foreign policy. Both the leaders said that in this complex situation, India has adopted a balanced and sensible stance keeping in mind its interests.

In one of his articles, Shashi Tharoor justified India’s ‘silence’ and said that it is not a moral weakness but a part of responsible diplomacy. Citing the example of the non-aligned policy of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, he said that India has always maintained a balance between principle and practicality.

Shashi Tharoor wrote, “Non-alignment did not mean staying away from a moral stance, but understanding that maintaining distance from major global conflicts is necessary for the sovereignty and security of the country.”

He said that in today’s era, India is following the policy of ‘multi-alignment’, that is, it gives priority to its national interest while maintaining its relations with different global powers.

He also acknowledged that the ongoing war against Iran is not justified under international law, but India’s silence is not an endorsement of it, rather it is a conscious decision.

“For the government to see what impact any statement will have on the country’s economy and strategic position is not moral surrender, but responsible governance,” he said.

At the same time, Manish Tiwari also supported the stand of the central government in a recent program. He said that there is not just one but many conflicts going on in West Asia and in such a situation it is not easy to support any one side.

Manish Tewari said, “This is not India’s fight. We have always played a limited role in this region, so it is wise to maintain distance.” Referring to India’s strategic autonomy, he said that the right policy is to protect its interests and maintain balance.

Here, the opposition is continuously raising questions about the alleged silence of the central government and its late reaction on the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader. Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi had also written an open letter criticizing the government on this issue.

However, with two senior Congress leaders supporting the government’s stand, differences within the party are clearly visible. Due to this, the edge of the opposition’s allegations also seems to be weakening.

Let us tell you that even before this, Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tiwari had supported the diplomatic initiative of the Central Government after ‘Operation Vermillion’.
