After ‘Dhurandhar’ success, Karan Johar drops hint on ‘Takht’ comeback

There was a time when there was so much hype and anticipation for Karan Johar’s dream project ‘Takht’, which was looking like one of Bollywood’s biggest films. Big stars, big sets, and a royal story, and then it quietly disappeared.

Now, the film is being talked about again. This comes after Ranveer Singh’s recent success with Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2.

After seeing the 40-year-old actor roaring at screens, fans started asking about the fate of Takht.

In a recent chat, the 52-year-old filmmaker provided a simple but clear update.

“There is no derivative of Takht being made… There is no revival of Takht currently on the cards. But Takht is a film I will definitely make while I can still breathe and stand on my feet,”he said.

The film, first announced in 2020, had a strong cast. Along with Ranveer Singh, there were Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor.

Set in Mughal times, the story focuses on the fight between brothers Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb.

The Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director says it is “one of the strongest screenplays” he has worked on, written by Sumit Roy.

But things did not go as planned. Last year, he said “multiple factors” stopped the film from moving ahead. He did not explain more.

It was considered one of  Johar’s passion projects, something he was deeply invested in, and even the release date of Takht had already been locked.

There are several reports explaining whythis period drama was shelved. One major reason was the delay caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Another factor was the backlash Karan Johar faced over nepotism, especially after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, as Takht featured star kids like Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Janhvi Kapoor.

After the film’s announcement, he was heavily trolled for casting star kids, and the criticism intensified after Sushant Singh Rajput’s passing. As a result, he stayed away from the public eye and social media for some time. However, his recent statement has once again revived hopes around the film.
