Shreyas Iyer, the new captaincy star in IPL history, Dhoni is a strong contender after Rohit and Gambhir.
New Delhi: Captaincy has always been a big topic of discussion in the history of IPL, where there are some names who have ruled the tournament with their strategy and calm mind. At the top of this list comes the names of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, who have established themselves in the category of great captains by making their teams win the title five times, while Gautam Gambhir also made his mark by making Kolkata the champion twice.
Captaincy has always been a big topic of discussion in the history of IPL, where there are some names who have ruled the tournament with their strategy and calm mind. At the top of this list comes the names of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, who have established themselves in the category of great captains by making their teams win the title five times each. Gautam Gambhir also created his own identity by making Kolkata champion twice.
Now a new name is emerging rapidly in this list and that is Shreyas Iyer who has impressed everyone with his captaincy. The special thing about Iyer is that he has taken not just one team but three different franchises to the finals, which is a unique achievement in itself in the history of IPL.
In the year 2020, while captaining Delhi, he took the team to the finals for the first time, however, they had to face defeat against Mumbai Indians. After this, in 2024, he made Kolkata Knight Riders the champion and proved his leadership abilities. Then in 2025, he reached the finals with Punjab Kings, but this time he had to face defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Former cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath believes that it is too early to put Iyer at par with legends like Dhoni and Rohit as both of them have achieved consistent success and won many titles but there is no doubt that Iyer has firmly joined the race and in the coming times he can go higher in this list.
It is not easy to be captain in IPL, here you have to take players from different countries together, the expectations of the team management are different and the pressure in every match is also very high, in such a situation, the way Iyer has handled all these challenges as a young captain is praiseworthy.
If we look at his captaincy record, he has led the team in 83 matches so far in which he has won 48 matches. These figures show that he is not only a captain with potential but also a leader who gives results.
While names like Dhoni, Rohit and Gambhir are written in golden letters in the history of IPL, now Shreyas Iyer is slowly moving in the same direction. If he is successful in getting his team the title again in the coming season, then it would not be wrong to say that IPL has got another great captain.
