Premier League: 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, Manchester United will file complaint on referee’s decisions

Manchester United News: Manchester United’s team referee organization ‘Professional Game Match Officials Ltd.’ (PGMOL) is preparing to file a formal complaint. He believes the refereeing decisions in Friday’s Premier League clash against AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium were inconsistent. This match was a 2-2 draw.

The match was in the news for several controversial decisions, including the awarding of two penalties and the rejection of another appeal. The visiting team (Manchester United) was very disappointed with the work of the referee due to these decisions. Defender Harry Maguire was recently recalled to the England squad for friendlies ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. He went through a difficult phase in this match. In the final moments of the match, he pulled down Ivanilsson inside the penalty area, due to which he received a red card. After this decision, Bournemouth equalized the score by converting the penalty awarded into a goal.

Carrick expressed displeasure over the referee’s decision

However, Manchester United’s anger was more over an earlier decision, when Amad Diallo was fouled inside the box, but the referee and VAR decided to let play continue. This decision was also controversial because United had received a penalty for a similar foul in the early part of the match, which was converted by captain Bruno Fernandes. Michael Carrick expressed his displeasure over the referee’s decisions, saying that it is incomprehensible to take different decisions despite the same foul being committed in both the incidents.

‘BBC’ Carrick said, ‘My first thought is that they definitely got one of these calls wrong, because they gave a penalty once on a similar incident, whereas the second time, when someone was caught with both hands, they did not give a penalty. So they gave a penalty on the incident with Mathias Cunha, but not on the second incident with Amad. I think both of these incidents were very similar, catching someone inside the box with both hands, causing that player to fall while still in control of the ball.”

He said, ‘It was a huge moment of the match, and I don’t understand that you can give a penalty on one incident and not on another, it is madness. This is as clear as it can be. It is clear, if he considers it a penalty the first time, he will have to consider it a penalty the second time also. I don’t understand why you can’t give it a penalty. And then the goal was scored, and after that there was chaos. It’s shocking.”

According to the BBC report, United’s director of football Jason Wilcox is expected to speak to refereeing chief Howard Webb to get clarity on these decisions. Meanwhile, Manchester missed a good chance to consolidate their third position in the Premier League points table. The former champions now have 55 points from 31 matches, and are just four points ahead of Aston Villa, who have played one match less.
