PM Modi spoke to Iranian President on phone: extended greetings on Eid and Nowruz, emphasized on freedom of navigation

New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday greeted Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Eid and Nowruz and expressed hope that this festive season brings peace, stability and prosperity to West Asia. In a telephonic conversation with the President of Iran, Prime Minister Modi condemned the attacks on critical infrastructure in the region, which threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains.

They reiterated the importance of protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring that shipping lanes remain open and safe. “Spoke to President Dr. Masoud Pejeshkian and extended greetings on Eid and Nowruz,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X. We expressed our hope that the festive season brings peace, stability and prosperity to West Asia. “We condemn the attacks on critical infrastructure in the region, which threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains,” he said.

The Prime Minister also appreciated Iran’s continued support for the security of Indian citizens in Iran. This was the second telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Modi and the President of Iran since the current conflict began. Iranian President Pezeshkian on March 12 briefed Prime Minister Modi on the current situation in Iran and shared his perspective on recent developments in the region.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the emerging security situation in the region and reiterated India’s stand that all issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. The US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, in response to which Iran targeted its neighboring countries and Israel.

Iran also controls the Strait of Hormuz, an important maritime transportation route. 20 percent of the world’s energy products are transported through it. Since the conflict, Iran has allowed very few ships to transit. Since the conflict began, Prime Minister Modi has also spoken to leaders of many countries. These include the leaders of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, France and Malaysia.
