Peripheral Expressway: Rekha Gupta government gives green signal to the outstanding payment of Rs 3700 crore of Peripheral Expressway, Rs 500 crore will be released as the first installment
Peripheral Expressway: Delhi government has approved the payment of outstanding amount of Rs 3700 crore for the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressway project. The cabinet has approved it with the approval of CM Rekha Gupta. Delhi government has a total outstanding of Rs 3700 crore. A total of Rs 500 crore will be paid in the current financial year 2025-26. The remaining amount of Rs 3203.33 crore will be given in installments based on future budget provisions. CM Rekha Gupta said that this payment was stopped due to the failures of the previous government.
To make Delhi jam free, the Central Government had built the Eastern-Western Peripheral Expressway around it. Due to its construction, vehicles coming from other states which have to go to Haryana and Rajasthan can go without entering Delhi. Delhi government also had to pay the cost of land acquisition for the construction of this expressway. But, the previous AAP government did not give money to the central government.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has said that the previous government never showed seriousness about this important project and due to political malice deliberately withheld the payment to the Central Government, which has harmed the interests of Delhi. These expressways, started in 2018, have provided a safety net (for traffic) to Delhi through Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. This payment will resolve inter-state financial issues. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that this step will rapidly move the capital towards becoming ‘smart and pollution free’.
Peripheral Expressway is special for Delhi
The Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) and the Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE) together form the ‘Smart Ring Road’ around Delhi. These six-lane expressways, approximately 135 kilometers long, allow lakhs of heavy trucks and commercial vehicles to reach Delhi, which have to go to Uttar Pradesh from Haryana.
