PSL 2026 to be held behind closed doors amid Pakistan’s oil crisis Read
Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 It will go ahead under unprecedented circumstances, with all matches to be played behind closed doors due to the growing fuel crisis and security concerns in the country. According to media reports, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has adopted a compressed approach, limiting venues and eliminating public attendance to ensure the tournament can go ahead without disruption.
PSL 2026 limited to two cities
Originally planned as a multi-city event, involving Multan, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, the tournament will now be held only in Karachi and Lahore. This decision significantly reduces travel requirements and operating costs at a time when fuel availability has become a major concern across the country.
The PCB has also canceled the opening ceremony, a move aimed at saving resources and avoiding unnecessary logistics pressure. The matches will take place in empty stadiums, which will be in contrast to the usual euphoric atmosphere associated with the PSL.
Global tensions give rise to domestic crisis
These changes come in response to disruptions in global oil supply, driven by the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Geopolitical tensions have had a direct impact on Pakistan’s fuel reserves, resulting in widespread shortages and strict government measures to control consumption.
Authorized authorities have imposed restrictions on public movement, including temporary school closures, extended holidays around Eid, and work-from-home instructions for many sectors. These steps are part of a broader effort to manage limited fuel supplies and maintain essential services.
Revised logistics reshape the original plan
Under the original schedule, Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium was scheduled to host 15 matches, while the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was allotted 11 matches. Faisalabad, Karachi, and Multan were also scheduled to host several games during the tournament. The revised plan eliminates many of these venues, concentrating all matches in Karachi and Lahore. This adjustment not only simplifies logistics but also ensures better coordination of resources such as fuel, security, and transportation.
The tournament format remains unchanged, with six teams each playing 10 league matches. The top four teams will advance to the playoffs, which consist of Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final. The PSL 2026 final is still scheduled to be held on May 3 in Lahore, while May 4 has been reserved as a backup day. While fans will not be present in stadiums, the PCB is counting on strong television and digital audiences to maintain the league’s global appeal.
