Global Terrorism Index 2026: Pakistan becomes the most dangerous country in the world, tops in terrorism
Global Terrorism Index 2026: India’s neighboring country Pakistan has reached the first position in the Global Terrorism Index 2026 for the first time. This ranking reflects the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the country. According to the report, deaths related to terrorism will increase by 6% in 2025, which is a big cause for concern. A total of 1,139 deaths and 1,045 terrorist incidents were recorded, the highest since 2013.
Globally, Pakistan is now among the five countries that account for nearly 70 percent of the world’s terrorism-related deaths. These also include Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger and Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Increasing attacks and worsening security situation
The report of the Institute for Economics and Peace shows that the number of terrorist incidents in Pakistan continues to remain serious. Although there has been a slight decline in the number of attacks in some cases, the number of deaths has increased for the sixth consecutive year. This shows that despite fewer attacks, their intensity and impact have become more dangerous.
Growing threat of Tehreek-e-Taliban
TTP ‘Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’ has become the most dangerous terrorist organization of Pakistan and is ranked third globally. This organization is responsible for more than 67% of the attacks in Pakistan since 2009. Its attacks increased by 24% in 2025 and a total of 595 attacks were recorded. It is many times more active than other organizations.
Afghan border and sensitive areas
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have been the most affected areas. Violence has increased rapidly, especially near the Afghan border, where 637 people died. After Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, instability in these areas has increased further, which has given opportunity to terrorist organizations to strengthen.
Hostage incidents and global concerns
A huge increase in hostage-taking incidents was also seen in 2025. While 101 people were taken hostage in 2024, this number increased to 655 in 2025. Jafar train attack was a big example of this. Globally, Pakistan is now included in the five countries where about 70% of the world’s terrorist deaths occur. This situation has become a matter of serious concern for the international community and is posing a major threat to regional stability.
