Collegium has failed to protect true judges: Justice Dipankar Dutta
Bureau Prayagraj. Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Dutta on Saturday remarked that the Supreme Court Collegium has in the past failed to protect judges who showed courage and integrity; He warned that such incidents could discourage judges from prioritizing ethics over career advancement.”
Justice Dutta was speaking at the ‘First Supreme Court Bar Association National Conference 2026’ organized on the topic ‘Reimagining Judicial Governance’. He urged that the members of the collegium should rise to the occasion and protect their fellow judges.

Ultimately, it is each judge’s own conviction, courage and independence that matters most. It should be done on the basis of ability, honesty, temperament and hard work. Associations, social proximity, lobbying, informal recommendations, or perceived closeness to those in power—be it judicial, political or otherwise—must be completely excluded.”
