Many rules related to zero balance savings account will change from April 1, these facilities will be available, customers must know

The month of April 2026 is going to be very important for financial matters. Many new rules related to Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account are going to come into effect from April 1. Which was announced by RBI only in December 2025. Zero balance account holders will not get the benefit of any facilities. Which they should know about in advance.

Earlier banks could levy charges after a certain number of deposits. But from April 1, there will be no no-cash deposit charge for BSBD account. Earlier, no official limit was set by RBI for UPI transactions. Many banks used to set internal limits on this. But under the new rules, customers will be allowed unlimited transactions.

Who can open BSBD account?

From April 2026, banks cannot refuse to open BSBD account on the basis of income, background or profile. Whereas earlier the bank was allowed to refuse opening such accounts on the basis of income or profile. Not only this, earlier many services were limited. But now all the account holders will get the benefit of banking services. Each individual can open only one Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account. Now customers will not be allowed to open both BSBD and regular savings accounts simultaneously. Customers can choose between BSBD or regular variants.

You will get the benefit of these services

As per RBI instructions, the bank will have to offer some services free of cost to the account holders. There will be no permission to maintain any minimum balance for this. Apart from this, facilities like doing transactions through any electronic means, no limit on the number or amount of deposits made in a month, no annual fee at the time of issuing or renewing ATM card/ATM-cum-debit card are also included.

Every year, check books containing at least 25 checks will have to be made available to the banks for free. Internet mobile banking facility will also be free. In lieu of passbook, monthly statement of account will be given free of cost in print or in email. Apart from this, the bank will not charge any fee for issuing a new passbook if the previous passbook is full. A minimum of four free withdrawals will be allowed in a month. However, this will not be applicable to transactions done through Point of Sale, NEFT, RTGS, IMPS if the platform except ATM transactions.
