Report: KKR’s pace puzzle sees a new piece in Saurabh Dubey
Reports from Cricbuzz have claimed that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have signed left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey as a replacement for Akashdeep, ahead of IPL 2026, to mitigate the scarcity of seam bowling resources. KKR’s bowling stocks have taken a hit after Harshit Rana’s and Akash Deep’s unavailability for the 2026 season. Forcing the management to look beyond their primary options.
What makes the situation more complicated is that there is a lot of uncertainty with regard to the availability of fast bowlers abroad, and this necessitates KKR to strengthen their home-grown core. In those terms, the addition of Dubey would not be just a regular replacement, but a strategic measure to give the bowling attack balance and flexibility prior to the tournament. Since KKR is preparing to play their first match against the Mumbai Indians on March 29, the necessity of having a good pace option has been growing more pressing.
Why Saurabh Dubey could be more than just a backup for KKR
Saurabh Dubey, a left-arm fast medium bowler from Vidarbha, has yet to make his IPL debut, but has been a prominent name in the domestic circuit. He was previously part of Sunrisers Hyderabad, but did not feature at any high level. This time, KKR’s bowling constraints have made his path clearer and easier for the team’s playing XI, and an opportunity to showcase itself.

The move was supported by former India seamer and selector Subroto Banerjee, who emphasized the skill set and the potential impact of Dubey. He remembered how Dubey had fared in the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup when he was in the hands of Rahul Dravid, and how he was able to create additional bounce and produce a swing in both directions. All these qualities are reasons why he would be worthy of inclusion in the team, more so in the T20 games, where left-arm seamers provide an element of angle and pose difficult challenges to the batters.
Although he was not sold during the Abu Dhabi mini-auction in December, Dubey is still on the Registered Available Player Pool with a starting price of INR 30 lakh, which KKR can take as a replacement. Since then, he has been playing in the squad in Kolkata and will be eager to utilize most of this unanticipated chance. Having represented Vidarbha in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2025-26, Dubey now finds himself for his IPL stage debut as a KKR bowler.
