If you want to pass through Hormuz, you will have to pay Rs 18 crore, Iran’s big step after US threat, what will Trump do now?
Tax in Strait of Hormuz: Iran has decided to impose a transit tax of $2 million (about Rs 18.8 crore) on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This step has been taken amid the increasing tense situation with America and Israel and has already been effectively implemented.
Iranian MP Alauddin Borujerdi confirmed this to Iran’s state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). Borujerdi is a member of the Parliament’s National Security Committee. He said the move reflected a new “sovereign rule” in the Strait of Hormuz after several decades and demonstrated Iran’s strength.
Transit tax for war expenses
Borujerdi explained that it was necessary to collect the transit tax to take into account the expenses of the war. He stressed that the move reflects the power and strategic position of the Islamic Republic. This statement came after US President Donald Trump’s warning, in which he said that if the Strait of Hormuz is not opened within 48 hours, America can target Iran’s power infrastructure. Trump warned that Iran’s power plants would be destroyed, starting with the largest.
Israel’s energy infrastructure within reach of Iran
The Iranian MP responded by saying that Israel’s energy infrastructure was within Iran’s reach and could be destroyed “within a day.” Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian also responded to Trump, writing on social media platform X that the strait “is open to all, except Iran’s enemies. Threats only strengthen our unity.”
Iran has warned that if the US attacks power plants, it will completely close the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian military command said that in this situation, Israel’s power plants, energy and ICT infrastructure and the power plants of Gulf countries where there are US military bases or companies with American shareholders will be targeted.

Why is the Strait of Hormuz important?
The Strait of Hormuz is an important route connecting the Persian Gulf to the world. About one-fifth of the world’s oil passes through this route, but due to attacks on ships, the movement of oil tankers on this route has almost come to a standstill. Iran has made it clear that ships of countries other than its enemies will get safe passage.
