Big step by NHAI, now AI will monitor the highway, road defects will be detected immediately through dashcam.
NHAI AI System: This AI system will closely monitor the condition of the roads and help in identifying every small and big problem. In this, defects like potholes, cracks and broken parts of the road will be detected immediately. Besides, important facilities like lane marking, crash barriers, street lights and sign boards will also be regularly checked.

AI will monitor the highway
NHAI AI System: The biggest worry while driving on the road is the sudden dangers that appear. Like potholes, broken roads or encroachment that comes from nowhere. But now there is going to be relief from these problems. The national highways of the country are soon going to become hi-tech, where they will be monitored every moment with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI). National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to implement AI based dashcam monitoring system on about 40,000 km long national highways.
Through this technology, the condition of the roads will be monitored in real time, due to which bad roads will be identified immediately and they can be repaired quickly. Besides, this system will also strengthen road safety and will prove to be a big step towards smart road management.
What is AI Dashcam Monitoring System?
- This new system of NHAI will be known as ‘Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS)’.
- In this, roads will be monitored with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning.
- Under this scheme, high quality dashcams will be installed in Route Patrolling Vehicles (RPVs).
- These cameras will continuously record photos and videos of the road.
- The recorded data will be automatically checked through the AI system.
- With this technology, more than 30 types of road defects can be easily identified.
- This will reduce the need for repeated checks by humans.
- Also, road related problems will be detected faster than before.
What things will this system keep an eye on?
This AI system will closely monitor the condition of the roads and help in identifying every small and big problem. In this, defects like potholes, cracks and broken parts of the road will be detected immediately. Besides, important facilities like lane marking, crash barriers, street lights and sign boards will also be regularly checked. This technology will also be able to identify illegal encroachments and security related threats, such as cuts made at wrong places, hoardings put up without permission or vehicles parked in no parking areas.

How will AI dashcam monitoring system work?
- All the data received from the dashcam will be sent to a central digital platform.
- Here this data will be analyzed with the help of AI and smart dashboard.
- Officials will be able to easily see the condition of the roads in real time.
- They will also be able to compare changes in the road over time.
- The progress of repair and maintenance work will also be monitored.
- For better management, the entire highway network will be divided into five zones.
- This will make it easier to handle and monitor data.
- The information of this system will be linked to the central data system of National Highways Authority of India.
