Supreme Court News: Supreme Court slams UGC’s new rules! Notice to Central Government; What is the real issue?

Supreme Court on UGC Regulations: The legal battle against the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new rules has intensified. Taking cognizance of the petitions filed against these rules, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Central Government, UGC and other concerned parties and sought their reply. The court has now joined the matter with the original petition.

Objection of Indian Kshatriya Mahasabha

The petition has been filed by the National President of Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha and former MP Kunwar Harivansh Singh. These new rules are trying to divide the society. The petitioners have accused the UGC. “Caste discrimination is not limited to reserved classes but can occur in any category; therefore, it should not be limited to a particular community,” the petition argued.

Court’s strict remarks and adjournments

Earlier on January 29, the Supreme Court had stayed these rules which were notified on January 13. The court said the rules were “largely vague” and could have far-reaching consequences and create a rift in society. After this decision of the court, protests against these rules were seen in various places across the country.

A street fight has now started against the University Grants Commission (UGC)’s new rules. The Rajput Karni Sena staged strong protests in Jaipur against these rules and demanded their immediate withdrawal. Due to this movement, the academic and political atmosphere in Rajasthan has heated up.

“Youths will not be treated unfairly”

While leading the agitation, the president of the organization, Mahipal Singh Makrana, gave a clear warning that these new rules of the UGC are creating discrimination among the students. “We will not allow injustice to the youth under any circumstances. These rules are destructive to social harmony,” he said at the time.

The Karni Sena and the petitioners have raised the following questions on the technical interpretation of these rules, the caste discrimination under the new rules has been restricted to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and OBCs. General category students are not given any kind of institutional protection.

Absence of Grievance Redressal Mechanism: If a general category student is discriminated against, there is no separate grievance redressal mechanism for them under these rules, the protesters alleged. After this movement, everyone’s attention is now on what will be the role of the central government and the UGC.
