The era of Super Smash ends, New Zealand cricket’s new business model ready with NZ20

New Delhi: Now New Zealand Cricket has also decided to take a big step in the rapidly growing landscape of global T20 cricket. The board has formally decided to launch its new franchise-based 20 league NZ20, which can completely change the domestic cricket of the country in the times to come. This decision is not only to raise the level of the game, but it will also strengthen the financial condition and global identity of New Zealand cricket.

Super Smash has been the premier tournament of T20 cricket in New Zealand for the last two decades, but now considering the time and the biggest priority of franchise cricket in Miami, the Board has chosen a new path. The success of leagues like the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League has proven that the Frieze model not only provides a better platform to the players but is also financially sound for the board.

NZC chairperson Diana Puketapu-Lindon said in response to the historic assessment that the board considered a number of different considerations, including the possibility of expanding Australia’s Big Bash League, but ultimately retained the domestic identity, with the NZ20 league being considered the best option.

Although it is not yet fully implemented, the board’s ethos is now on expeditiously completing the licensing process and commercial entry for this new league. Following the Deloitte report and discussions with various stakeholders, it was concluded that New Zealand had a strong brand name that could be further enhanced through this new league.

The most special thing about the NZ20 league will be that in it, equal importance will be given to the friendship of both men and women. This step is being considered very important towards providing a new identity and wider platform to women’s cricket. Additionally, teams were formed on a regional basis so that local audiences could gather and watch their favorite players up close.

The performance of the New Zealand cricket team has also been excellent for some time. A strong foundation of this new league has been prepared for the women’s team to win the T20 World Cup and the men’s team to consistently perform well. This is why the Board is confident that NZ20 will not only give a new direction to domestic cricket but will also create its own identity at the international level.

  • This league is also considered very important from the economic point of view. The Board believes that this will not only open new sources of revenue but will also provide a world-class platform to the young players where they can hone their game by playing with international players.
