IPL 2026: Big change in Rajasthan Royals squad, Sam Curran’s replacement announced; Entry of star all-rounder from neighboring country
IPL 2026: Rajasthan Royals (RR) have suffered a major setback just before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Sam Curran, one of the team’s key all-rounders, has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to injury. The exclusion of the English all-rounder is considered a big strategic loss for Rajasthan, because he provided balance to the team with both bat and ball.
Dasun Shanaka got the responsibility
Rajasthan Royals, finding an immediate solution to this challenge, have included experienced Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka in the team. The franchise has made him a part of its squad for around Rs 2 crore.
Shanaka’s selection is an indication that the team is relying on experience and a multi-faceted player to fill Curran’s void to some extent.
Strong choice from international experience
Dasun Shanaka’s international career makes him a reliable all-rounder. He played for Sri Lanka in all three formats:
- 6th test – 140 runs
- 71 ODI – 1299 runs
- 131 T20 matches – 1912 runs
Has played, in which he has 3000+ runs and more than 80 wickets in his name. The thing to note is that he has scored the maximum runs in T20 only.
IPL experience also works in his favor, as he has previously been a part of Gujarat Titans, where he played 3 matches for the team. Along with this, he has played many matches in other international franchise league tournaments (BPL, ILC, PSL). As such, he is well aware of the challenging conditions and pressure of the league.
RR’s new strategy and challenge
Rajasthan Royals have not won the title since 2008 and this time the team will enter the field with the intention of ending their long drought.
However, this time the command of the team is in the hands of young Riyan Parag, which indicates a new beginning but also increases the challenges.
Shanaka’s entry is expected to strengthen the middle order, and his medium pace bowling can provide additional options to the team.
When and with whom will the first match take place?
Rajasthan Royals will begin their IPL 2026 campaign on March 30, where they will face Chennai Super Kings (CSK). This match will be played on March 30 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, which is going to be an important home venue for RR this season.
Sam Curran’s exit has definitely dealt a big blow to Rajasthan Royals, but Dasun Shanaka’s entry can provide balance and experience to the team.
Now all eyes will be on whether Shanaka is able to capitalize on this opportunity and play an important role in helping the team win the title after a long time.
