Air India is now going to start fitness checking on the basis of Body Mass Index (BMI) for its cabin crew. BMI is a simple method which tells whether a person’s body fat is normal or not, based on his height and weight. According to the airline, crew members with BMI between 18 and 24.9 will be considered in the ‘normal’ and ‘desired range’. What this means is clear—employees living in this range will not face any problems.
Underweight crew member not completely rejected
If a crew member’s BMI is found to be less than 18, he will be placed in the ‘underweight’ category. However, this does not mean that he will be directly rejected. In such a situation, the crew member will have to undergo medical evaluation and functional assessment. The doctor will decide whether he is physically fit and fit for duty or not. If the medical test is passed, the airline will clear him for duty.
Strict action against overweight and obese people
Crew members who fall in the overweight or obese category as per BMI will have to be removed from the list. This means they will be removed from the schedule and may take a pay cut. Within 7 days, medical tests like blood sugar, lipid profile etc. will have to be done at one’s own expense. There will be a return only after BMI becomes normal and passing the test. Previous medical reports will not be valid. Repeated rule violations will result in warning letters and the matter may reach HR.
When will the new policy be applicable to the crew?
Air India has issued a new health and fitness policy regarding the health and fitness of its cabin crew members, which will come into effect from May 1, 2026. Under this policy, crew will be screened on the basis of body mass index (BMI). Airlines can now conduct weight and BMI checks without notice before or after a flight, during training or at the Home Training Academy.
