Bogota, March 23. The Defense Ministry of the South American country Colombia said on Monday that a military plane carrying 125 soldiers crashed in the southern part of the country near the border with Peru. The Lockheed Martin Hercules C-130 plane was taking off from Puerto Legizamo, south of Colombia, on the Peruvian border, when it crashed, Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez said. About 80 soldiers are feared dead in the plane crash.
According to the report of news agency ‘Reuters’, the place where this accident occurred is located in the interior area of Colombia’s southern Amazon region near the Peruvian border. The plane was carrying armed forces soldiers.
Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez said, ‘With deep sadness I inform that a Hercules aircraft of our Colombian Aerospace Force suffered a tragic accident while taking off from Puerto Leguizamo (Putumayo). At that time the plane was carrying soldiers of our public force.
He said emergency and military teams have been deployed at the accident site. However, the minister or officials have not yet confirmed the number of casualties or the cause of the accident. An officer said, ‘Military units are already present at the spot. However, the number of victims and the cause of the accident are not yet known exactly.
Meanwhile, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said, ‘I hope that no one has lost their lives in this terrible accident. This is an accident that should never have happened.
