Prime Minister Modi, while giving a detailed statement in the Parliament on the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the situation related to Iran, described it as serious and worrying. He said that about one crore Indian citizens live and work in this area. Therefore their security is the top priority of the government.
PM stressed the need for political consensus
Prime Minister Modi also stressed the need for unity and political consensus at the national level on this issue. He said that in view of the situation, he has directly communicated with the leaders of many countries and the Indian missions are engaged in providing all possible help to the citizens stranded in the affected areas.
According to the Prime Minister, more than 3.75 lakh Indians have been brought back safely since the conflict began. About 1,000 citizens have also returned from Iran, which includes a large number of medical students. He said that the government is constantly monitoring the situation and if needed, further relief and rescue operations will be intensified.
Speaking on the issue of energy supply, PM Modi underlined the importance of the Strait of Hormuz. He said that this waterway is the main route for supply of crude oil, gas and fertilizers for many countries including India. Due to the current tension, the movement of ships here has been affected, but India has ensured through diplomatic efforts that essential supplies are not disrupted. Some Indian ships which were stranded in this area have been taken out safely.
What did PM say on international routes?
The Prime Minister made it clear that any kind of obstruction in this important international route cannot be accepted. He appealed to all parties to exercise restraint and reduce tension. Also strongly condemned the attacks on civilians, energy infrastructure and transportation infrastructure. He said that India has always been a supporter of peace, dialogue and diplomacy and this path is the most effective in the present crisis also.
Regarding LPG supply, he said that India fulfills about 60% of its needs through imports. In such an uncertain situation, priority is being given to domestic consumers and efforts are also being made to increase production, so that the impact on the common people is minimal.
Finally, the Prime Minister warned that this conflict could have long-term effects. Therefore the country will have to remain united. He said that some elements may try to take advantage of the situation by spreading rumours, but the government and the public will have to work together to thwart such attempts.
