Regarding the conflict in the Middle East, Government of India On Monday, it was clarified that the country has sufficient reserves of oil. however, LPG Supply remains a concern. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refining), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), informed on Monday that crude oil stocks are sufficient. He added that 3,50,000 new commercial and domestic PNG (PNG) connections have been provided in the last three weeks. Addressing a press conference, she said, “Supply of LPG is still a concern. However, there are no reports of complete supply disruption anywhere.” Sharma also mentioned that 15,800 tonnes of commercial LPG has been supplied to 20 states and union territories.

Sujata Sharma said, “In the last three weeks, approximately 3,50,000 domestic and commercial PNG connections have been provided or commissioned. Although supply of LPG is still a concern, there is no shortage at the LPG distributor level. Panic-driven bookings for LPG have now come down.” Answering a question of the journalists, he confirmed that the LPG door-to-door service (deliveries) is going on completely smoothly.

Sharma added, “As far as commercial LPG is concerned, approximately 50% of the total commercial LPG stock will now be allocated under the jurisdiction of state governments and Union Territories. The Government of India has requested the state governments to include restaurants, dhabas, hotels, industrial canteens, food processing units, dairy units, subsidized canteens or canteens run by state governments or local bodies. Inclusion of 5-kg FTL (Free Trade LPG) cylinders for centres, community kitchens and migrant workers should be prioritized.” He concluded, “So far, approximately 20 states and Union Territories have distributed commercial LPG. A total of approximately 15,800 tonnes of commercial LPG stocks have been lifted.

Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it clear that the impact of the unprecedented crisis created by the conflict in West Asia is likely to be long-lasting and the government is fully prepared to deal with the crisis. Addressing the Lok Sabha on the current conflict in West Asia and the challenges it poses to India, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the effects of this crisis will continue to be felt for a long time. He further said that the citizens of the country will have to face this situation in the same way they faced the Covid-19 crisis.

Noting that disruptions in the ‘Strait of Hormuz’ and attacks on merchant ships were unacceptable, he asserted that the issue could only be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue. Prime Minister Modi further said that India is doing its best to de-escalate the tension and end the conflict. In his statement, he also mentioned that the preparations made by the government in the energy sector in the last one decade are proving to be very helpful in effectively dealing with the current situation.
