Campaign against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Delhi, Delhi Police deported more than 1,500 in 9 months

Delhi Police has claimed to continue taking action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the capital. According to the police, a total of 1,589 illegal Bangladeshis were identified and arrested from June 2025 to February 2026. According to the information, all the arrested people were sent back to Bangladesh via Agartala-Bangladesh border. This figure of Delhi Police is more than double the 720 people arrested in the last seven months (November 2024 to May 2025), highlighting the speed and effectiveness of action in this case in the capital.

The Home Ministry had issued orders for identification, verification and detention of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingya refugees. After this order, Delhi Police started active action. According to police data, around 220 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were detained between November 15, 2024 and April 20, 2025. They were handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and transported to the eastern states by rail and road and sent to Bangladesh via the border.

Campaign gained momentum after Pahalgam attack

Delhi Police said that after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025, the action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and Rohingya refugees was further intensified. Nearly 500 illegal Bangladeshis were detected within a month of the operation. A total of 1,589 illegal Bangladeshis and 55 Rohingya people were detained in the capital from June 2025 to February 2026. According to Delhi Police data, the highest number of arrests in 2025 were made from the outer districts of Delhi (386). This is followed by South-Eastern districts (287), North-Western (249), Northern (194), Southern (191), Outer-Northern (183), South-Western (168), Central (140), Western (148), Eastern (118), Dwarka (99), Shahdara (80), Rohini (71), North-Eastern (57) and New Delhi (20) districts respectively.

Bangladeshi found working in brick kilns

A senior Delhi Police official said that the Outer District team received information that most of the illegal Bangladeshi migrants were working as laborers in brick kilns in the border areas of Haryana and Rajasthan. The team traced their contractor and associates and conducted a search operation and detained all the illegal immigrants, the officer said. The detained people were further handed over to FRRO and sent through the border to Bangladesh.

Sent back by trains and planes

Identification and expulsion of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants has been effectively implemented. Initially DCPs of 15 police districts led the verification drive. The captured people were taken by train to West Bengal under the supervision of FRRO officers and from there to BSF posts by bus. Especially after the Pahalgam terror attack, the detained migrants were sent through special air flights from Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad to Agartala. After this, till now 1,589 Bangladeshi migrants have been sent back to their motherland through several special flights from Hindon Air Base.

Instructions to all states and union territories

Delhi Police has started investigating the network involved in illegal infiltration, fake documents, addresses and providing jobs as part of its drive to identify and expel illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. According to officials, the District Police, Crime Branch and Special Cell have registered several FIRs against this network and charge sheets have also been filed in many cases. Furthermore, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed police chiefs of all states and union territories to increase surveillance at the borders and take necessary steps to prevent entry of illegal migrants.
