IPL 2026: Blue, Red and Confusion Why do most of the IPL jerseys look the same? Learn the boring game behind colors
News India Live, Digital Desk: The 19th season of the Indian Premier League has started, but the players’ jerseys are being discussed more than their performance on the field. Cricket lovers say that if the names of the players are not written, it becomes difficult to identify which team is playing. Blue and red – these are two colors that IPL franchises are not losing their fascination with. This year too, 6 out of 10 teams are revolving around these colors, due to which fans are now calling it a ‘famine of creativity’. Blue and red ‘trap’: Which team in which situation? If we analyze the jerseys of IPL 2026, the repetition of colors is clearly visible: Dominance of blue: Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) have used their signature ‘navy’ ‘Blue’ has been retained. Whereas Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have also chosen the combination of blue and red. Battle of red: Punjab Kings (PBKS) are in their traditional red jersey, while RCB (RCB) has used the blue shade along with red and black this year. Teams that look different: Only Chennai Super Kings (yellow), Sunrisers Hyderabad (orange), Kolkata Knight Riders (violet) and Rajasthan Royals (pink) There are teams which have a distinct and clear identity of their own. Why don’t teams change their jerseys? 3 main reasons: According to the experts and designers who designed Team India’s jersey, there are many practical challenges behind it: Pressure from sponsors: On an average, there are 6 to 7 sponsors’ logos on an IPL jersey. Every brand wants its logo to appear in its original color, which overwhelms the original design of the jersey and makes it look like a ‘billboard’. Broadcasting needs: Some colors (like black or dark brown) don’t look very good on TV. Broadcasters demand colors that ‘pop out’ on the screen and are clearly visible to viewers. Blue and red colors are considered the safest in this matter. Fear of brand identity: Franchises fear that if they suddenly change the color, their brand connection with the fans may weaken. This is why they focus only on changing the ‘pattern’ rather than making major changes.Fans’ demand: Change should be like ‘The Hundred’ and ‘BBL’. Fans on social media are giving the example of England’s ‘The Hundred’ and Australia’s ‘Big Bash League’ (BBL), where every team has completely different and vibrant colors. Fans say that IPL should now step out of the safe circle of ‘golden lines’ and ‘blue-red’ and experiment with something new and bold.
