Rs 168 Crore Pune Outer Ring Road Project Will Ease City Traffic & Cut Travel Time To Bengaluru

Construction of the ambitious Pune Outer Ring Road project is progressing at an impressive pace, especially along the western corridor, nearly a year after work commenced. Once completed, this extensive highway is expected to transform regional mobility by easing the heavy traffic within Pune and improving connectivity across western Maharashtra.

Designed as a 168-km access-controlled highway with a width of around 110 metresthe project carries an estimated cost of ₹55,000–55,600 crore and aims to divert long-distance traffic away from Pune’s crowded internal routes. At present, vehicles moving between Mumbai and Bengaluru, or towards regions such as Satara, Sangli, and Kolhapur, are forced to pass through Pune, creating severe congestion. The ring road will offer a complete bypass, reducing traffic density and making inter-state travel quicker and more efficient.

High-Speed Western Corridor Transforming Pune’s Regional Connectivity

The western corridor of the Pune Outer Ring Road will begin at the Urse Interchange on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and extend to Shivare on the Pune–Bengaluru Highway. This alignment is expected to significantly cut down travel time for vehicles heading from Mumbai toward southern Maharashtra and Karnataka by eliminating the need to enter Pune city. Enhanced connectivity across important economic regions will support faster movement of goods and passengers, improving overall travel efficiency and reducing delays caused by urban congestion.

The project includes substantial infrastructure components to maintain continuous high-speed travel. The highway is planned as a four- to six-lane access-controlled route with a design speed of up to 120 km/h. It will feature eight twin tunnels, seven viaducts or interchanges, over 10 major bridges, 26 underpasses, 21 overpasses, and nine pedestrian underpasses. These structures are designed to provide grade separation, minimize interruptions, and increase safety for both highway users and local communities. Additionally, the entire route will be fenced to ensure controlled access and prevent unauthorized entry.

MSRDC Accelerates Pune Ring Road Development and Connectivity

Implementation of the project is being carried out by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). The ring road has been divided into two major corridors—65 km for the western stretch and 103 km for the eastern stretch. The western corridor alone spans 1,050 hectares across 38 villages, and officials have confirmed that over 99% of land acquisition is complete, enabling rapid construction. The project also includes essential facilities such as medical centres, food courts, police stations, public toilets, petrol pumps, and planned tree plantations to improve environmental quality along the route.

Once operational, the Pune Outer Ring Road will significantly reshape traffic patterns, reduce congestion within Pune, shorten travel times, and create a seamless high-speed corridor linking major highways across Maharashtra and beyond.
