Bangladesh clears players for PSL 2026 amid concerns
Dhaka: Bangladesh has granted permission to its cricketers to participate in the upcoming Pakistan Super League 2026, easing uncertainty over their involvement amid regional security concerns.
The decision comes after initial hesitation from authorities due to tensions linked to the ongoing Iran–US–Israel conflict, which have had a ripple effect on neighbouring countries, including Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Government reviews security situation
Earlier, Bangladesh’s State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque had indicated that no-objection certificates (NOCs) would not be issued if the situation remained unstable.
However, following consultations between multiple government bodies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad, authorities received assurances regarding player safety.
A senior government official confirmed that the decision to grant NOCs was made after evaluating updated security inputs. The Bangladesh High Commission also recommended participation, citing improved conditions and safety measures in place.
PCB takes precautionary measures
In response to security concerns, the Pakistan Cricket Board has limited matches to two major cities — Karachi and Lahore — which are considered relatively secure.
Additionally, initial matches of the tournament will be held behind closed doors, with no public attendance allowed. This move aims to minimise risks and ensure the safety of players, staff, and officials.
Authorities in Pakistan have also reportedly assured foreign boards of comprehensive security arrangements throughout the tournament.
Players begin travel
Following the clearance, several Bangladeshi players have already travelled to Pakistan to join their respective franchises. Among those expected to feature are Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Rishad Hossain, Parvez Hossain Emon, and Nahid Rana.
The participation of these players is seen as a positive development for the league, which relies on international talent to maintain its competitive appeal.
PSL 2026 set to begin
The Pakistan Super League 2026 season is scheduled to begin on March 26, with matches planned across Lahore and Karachi. The tournament organisers remain optimistic about conducting a smooth edition despite the geopolitical backdrop.
Balancing sport and security
The decision by Bangladesh highlights the delicate balance between ensuring player safety and supporting international sporting commitments. While concerns remain, the assurances provided by diplomatic and security channels appear to have played a crucial role in clearing the path for participation.
Conclusion
Bangladesh’s approval for its players to take part in PSL 2026 signals confidence in the security measures implemented by Pakistan authorities. As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on how effectively these arrangements are executed.
The development also underscores how international cricket continues to navigate complex geopolitical realities while striving to keep the sport running.
