Welfare vs Women vs War – Which Narrative Will Win?
Bengal elections 2026 are no longer just a fight for seats, but have become a direct contest between three big narratives Welfare, Women and War. On one hand, CM Mamata Banerjee’s government is expressing confidence in its welfare schemes and women vote bank, while on the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party is intensifying the issues of polarization, identity and nationalism. At the same time, opposition parties like Congress and Communists are trying to turn this fight into a debate on employment, inflation and democratic balance.
In such a situation, the question is simple – will the voters of Bengal again choose the “beneficiary model” and women-centric schemes, or will the election turn towards “War” i.e. polarization and identity politics? This contest of 2026 will not only decide power, but will also tell what is the strongest formula for winning elections in today’s era.
1. Welfare Narrative: Beneficiaries vs Corruption
Bengal The strongest pillar in the politics of India is Welfare Politics. In this matter TMC is ahead of BJP and other parties. TMC’s election agenda Lakshmir Bhandar means direct financial help to women
There is a promise of increasing it to ₹1500+ per month and ₹18,000–₹20,400 annually in 2026. Apart from this, there is a scheme to give monthly allowance of ₹ 1500 to unemployed youth. In the field of health, there is emphasis on Duare Chikitsa i.e. door-to-door health camps. Apart from this, TMC has promised to provide social security and salary increase for gig workers and Anganwadi workers. TMC’s political message is clear. The government delivers help to your doorstep. Therefore, you should also support the government in the elections.
BJP’s counter
Against these plans and strategies of TMC, BJP has accused the ruling party of corruption, job scam and ‘cut money’. BJP has promised to provide infrastructure and employment to the youth if a double engine government is formed in the state. Also said that we will continue the welfare scheme, but will make the currently ongoing scheme targeted and transparent. That is, Laxmi Bhandar, Yuva Sathi and door-to-door health camps will try to be implemented on the Delhi model. BJP is also promising the people of the state to increase the amount of honorarium in all the schemes.
Congress-Left
As far as the politics of Congress and Left in West Bengal is concerned, both the parties believe that the welfare agenda of Mamata government is only “temporary relief”. The Left or Congress government will focus on providing permanent jobs to the youth, industrialization of the state and quality education. Overall, TMC’s narrative on Welfare is the strongest, but corruption allegations can weaken it.
2. Women Narrative: Didi Factor vs Safety Debate
Women vote is decisive in Bengal elections 2026. There is not much difference between male and female vote bank. TMC’s strategy is to retain the party’s core vote of women voters. Keeping this in mind, money is being deposited directly into the accounts of women under the Lakshmir Bhandar Scheme. Other than this,
Kanyashree, Rupashree schemes continue as education and marriage assistance to girls. To maintain its hold on women voters this time too, TMC has given the slogan “Women are safe and financially independent”.
Unlike TMC, BJP is raising the issue of women’s safety in Bengal from every platform. Although the leaders are backfooted by the controversial statements of some party leaders, the party says that “we will also continue the schemes for women.” Whereas Congress-Left leaders are emphasizing on women’s rights, employment and equal pay.
Accusing TMC of “just cash transfer, not real empowerment”. In Women Narrative, TMC has a big advantage of Didi and Direct Benefit, but security and employment debate can challenge it.
3. Identity politics
This time the election of Bengal is a war i.e. political conflict and also a fight for identity. BJP’s focus is on CAA, infiltration, border security and Hindutva and nationalism. Bijani has given the slogan ‘Bengal’s identity is in danger’. In response to this, TMC has given the slogan of Bengali identity versus outsider politics. TMC is also accusing BJP of doing politics of polarization. At the same time, under the guise of “polarization vs democracy” of Congress-Left, both the parties are trying to divert people’s attention from the real issues. BJP is aggressive in the War Narrative, but TMC is trying to counter this through Bengali identity.
4. Is BJP trying to set the narrative? In Will it be successful? The expert gave this answer
Santosh Mandal, Chief Editor of News Asia, says that the impact of Middle East War in Bengal War is not much. The important issue is on women vote bank. TMC’s position is strong on this issue, but BJP is planning to defeat TMC by raising criminal incidents like rape and murder, infiltrators, CAA and NRC. BJP is also promising to increase the honorarium amount in women and youth schemes. Besides, if the double engine government is formed, BJP is also trying to create an environment in its favor for rapid development and industrialization in the infrastructure sector in the state.
Santosh Mandal says that leaders of other parties are lagging far behind in setting the narrative. This time there is also an effect of anti-incumbency factor. If BJP is successful in setting the narrative then it can benefit from it.
