Robin Uthappa wants to stop auction of players in IPL

A debate has once again erupted regarding the player selection system of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has demanded to end buying players through the current auction system and adopt the draft system. He says that the auction of players treats them like a commodity, which is not respectable.

Robin Uthappa has been a two-time IPL champion and was part of the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team. He has said through social media, “We should stop the auction system in cricket… In today’s time, it is not right to sell humans like commodities.” He also added that there is a limit to entertainment and now it is being crossed.

Know how the draft system of American leagues is

America dominates the world’s biggest sports leagues. The National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), and National Hockey League (NHL) all employ draft systems.

In this system, new players are included in the teams through draft. The special thing is that the teams which performed poorly in the previous season get the opportunity of selection first, so that balance is maintained in the competition.

Additionally, salary caps apply in the NFL, NBA and NHL, due to which teams cannot spend more than a certain limit. However, there are no strict limits on spending in MLB.

Open market model of European football

In contrast to the American model, Europe’s football leagues follow a completely different system. Big leagues like the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A have an open market system.

In this, the clubs negotiate directly with the players or their clubs and decide the contracts of the players. There is no salary cap here, due to which financially strong clubs can easily buy top players. However, some financial rules and squad limits do apply. Apart from this, the transfer window prescribed by FIFA opens twice a year, which creates a lot of excitement and buzz in the football world.

What can be the change in IPL?

The current auction system of the IPL makes it different from other leagues, where players go to teams through bidding on an open platform. Uthappa’s comments have intensified the debate on whether the time has come for the IPL to also move towards a draft system.

Experts believe that the draft system can balance the competition and make the process of selecting players more systematic. At the same time, supporters of the auction system argue that it increases the popularity and transparency of the league. Currently, the debate is ongoing whether IPL will change its current structure or proceed with the auction model.
