Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0: New opportunities worth Rs 3 lakh crore in O&M sector, target of every household tap by 2028

Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 Opportunities: With the launch of the second phase of Jal Jeevan Mission, the Central Government has taken a big step regarding water supply in rural India. Under this new scheme, full attention will now be given not only to creating infrastructure but also to its maintenance and providing better services. The next few years will see revolutionary changes in the infrastructure in rural areas of the country through the opportunity of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. Budget and O&M

According to ICRA report, new opportunities worth about Rs 3 lakh crore are going to be created in the operation and maintenance sector under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. Now the entire focus of the government will not be limited to just laying the pipeline but will be on keeping the system running and managing it for a long time. The total budget of this ambitious scheme has now increased to more than Rs 8.69 lakh crore, which is a huge amount towards rural development.

The government has now extended its earlier deadline of providing 100 percent tap connections to 19.4 crore rural households from 2024 to December 2028. The mission, which was launched in August 2019, has made tremendous progress so far and the number of households with tap connections has increased from 323.6 lakh to 1,582.3 lakh. According to the data till February 2026, water coverage in rural India has reached more than 81 percent, which is considered a very commendable achievement.

The second phase of this mission will provide huge benefits to engineering, procurement and construction i.e. EPC sector as well as companies manufacturing PVC and HDPE pipes. According to the report, companies which have a strong technical base and service network are expected to benefit the most from this change. Due to increase in the budget of the projects, there is a possibility of significant improvement in the payment situation to the companies doing the work.

At present, in many states, there is a delay of more than 6 months in the payment of contractors and companies, to reduce which the government is making serious efforts. A target has been set to reduce this payment deadline to less than 60 days by September 2026 so that both the speed and quality of work is maintained. This improvement in the payment system will increase liquidity in the market and all small and big companies will get financial help to complete their projects on time.

Under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, digital systems and Sujalam Bharat platform will now be used to monitor regular supply of water and its purity. With this inclusion of technology, water shortage or quality deterioration in any area can now be detected immediately and improvement will be possible. The government now aims to develop it not just as a project but as a sustainable public service model that can continue for years.

For the success of this mission, the role of Gram Panchayats and local institutions is now being made stronger and more responsible than ever before. Ensuring people’s participation at the local level will prevent wastage of water and rural people will be able to take care of their own water supply system. The report states that reducing the expenditure-budget gap after 2025-26 is a big challenge for which the emphasis is now on quality and energy efficiency.
