Gandhinagar. A big change is being seen in the politics of Gujarat. The state government has introduced the ‘Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill 2026’ in the Assembly, which aims to introduce uniform laws for all religions in matters like marriage, divorce and inheritance. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel presented this bill in the Assembly. If this bill is passed, Gujarat will become the second state in the country after Uttarakhand to implement UCC. It is noteworthy that Uttarakhand had passed this law in February 2024.

The ‘Gujarat Uniform Civil Code, 2026’ will be applicable across the state, even affecting Gujaratis living outside the state. However, Scheduled Tribes and certain traditional rights groups are excluded from this law. Important points of the bill include ban on polygamy and mandatory registration of live-in relationships. According to the proposal, marriage will be valid only if neither of them has a living spouse. Besides, the process of registration and termination of live-in relationships has also been decided to bring them within the legal ambit. Before implementing this bill, the expert committee constituted by the state government has also submitted its report, on the basis of which this bill has been prepared.

However, as soon as the bill was introduced, protests started. Social Democratic Party of India workers demonstrated in Lal Darwaza area of Ahmedabad, where many people were detained. Apart from this, AIMIM has also opposed this bill. While the government is calling it a big step towards equality and uniformity, the opposition and some organizations are raising questions about it. In such a situation, this issue is likely to heat up further in the coming days.
