Indian Army increasing deployment of ‘Pinaka’ on China-Pak border, target of 22 regiments
The Indian Army is taking big steps towards further strengthening its artillery strength. According to media reports, the Army is rapidly increasing the deployment of indigenous Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) system on the borders with China and Pakistan. This step has been taken in view of the persistent security challenges on the northern and western fronts.
After a new unit became operational recently, a total of seven active regiments of Pinaka have been deployed in these sensitive areas. This expansion is not going to stop here. The Eighth Regiment of the Army is also being prepared rapidly and has received more than 50 percent of the required equipment. According to defense officials, this unit will be completely mission ready by the end of 2026.
Under the long-term plan, two more regiments are set to be inducted next year, taking the total number to 10. However, the ultimate goal of the Army is to raise 22 Pinaka Regiments to ensure comprehensive fire power and strategic edge on the borders.
The foundation for this expansion was laid in August 2020, when the Defense Ministry signed a contract worth about £250 million (approximately ₹2,580 crore). Under these agreements, Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), Tata Advanced Systems and Larsen & Toubro were entrusted with the responsibility of producing six regiments. This has also strengthened the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
From a technical point of view, there has been significant progress in the Pinaka system. The initial Mark-1 version of this system, developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), had a range of about 40 kilometers. Now, with the arrival of Guided Pinaka and Long-Range Guided Rockets, its range has increased to 120 kilometers.
These new generation rocket systems are capable of targeting important targets located in enemy hinterland with high accuracy. This gives the Indian Army a strong conventional deterrence capability on mountainous and desert borders.
