Harish Rana died after being in coma for 13 years, it was the first case of euthanasia with the permission of the Supreme Court.

New Delhi. For the first time, a major development has come to light in the case of Passive Euthanasia in the country. Harish Rana, who was in coma for 13 years, breathed his last at AIIMS Delhi on Tuesday. Harish Rana was admitted to the palliative care ward of AIIMS on March 14 after getting permission for euthanasia from the Supreme Court. Earlier on March 11, the court, while hearing the parents’ petition, had allowed passive euthanasia under the supervision of doctors.

How was the process completed?
A committee of experts was formed in AIIMS, under whose supervision the nutrition and life-saving support given to Harish was gradually removed. Special care was taken to ensure that the patient does not suffer any kind of problem during this procedure.

What happened to Harish?
Harish Rana was a B.Tech student at Punjab University, Chandigarh. In 2013, he suffered a serious head injury after falling from the fourth floor, after which he went into a coma. Since then, his family and doctors were continuously treating him and he was kept alive through a food pipe and other medical support.

What is passive euthanasia?
In this process, the artificial support being given to the patient like nutrition, oxygen and other life support systems is gradually removed. It is also ensured that the patient does not feel any kind of pain or discomfort. This case has once again brought to the fore the legal and ethical debate regarding euthanasia in the country.
