Harish Rana relieved of 13 years of pain in the form of ‘death’, Supreme Court had granted permission for dignified euthanasia.


New Delhi. Harish Rana, a resident of Ghaziabad, has got dignified euthanasia. On March 11, the Supreme Court had given permission for passive euthanasia to Harish Rana. This is the first case of euthanasia being allowed in the country. Harish Rana was in a coma for more than 13 years after being injured in an accident. On behalf of his parents, a petition demanding euthanasia was filed in the Supreme Court to relieve the son from pain. After getting permission for euthanasia from the court, Harish was admitted to AIIMS, Delhi on March 14, where he died today.

Harish Rana was a student of Punjab University. In 2013, he suffered a serious head injury after falling from the fourth floor of the hostel and since then he was in a continuous coma. He was alive with the help of life support equipment. Over the years, his parents tried their best for his treatment but to no avail. Ultimately he filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding euthanasia to free his son. After the report of AIIMS doctors, the Supreme Court allowed dignified euthanasia.

After this, a team of doctors from AIIMS was formed and Harish was kept under their supervision. Where first Harish’s liquid diet was stopped and later water was also stopped. In this way, under the supervision of doctors, Harish Rana was given euthanasia with full respect. Harish Rana’s parents had also expressed their desire to donate their son’s organs, although at present no response has been issued by AIIMS on which of Harish’s organs are suitable for transplant.
