120 in UP and 60 in Bihar; the number of MPs from Maharashtra will also increase! Will delimitation change the equation of power?
Lok Sabha Seats After Delimitation: The law for 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies has been pending for a long time. The government hopes to implement it before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. According to sources, talks are going on with the opposition parties and if necessary, the government will introduce a Constitution Amendment Bill for this during the current parliamentary session.
Apart from the Constitution Amendment Bill, the government is also working on another bill to set up a Delimitation Commission. Both these bills are likely to be approved in the cabinet meeting to be held on Wednesday. Till now, Delimitation Commissions have been constituted four times in the country and on the basis of these the Lok Sabha seats have also been increased.
This time, in view of the fight between South and North, it can be said that the makers of the Constitution would hardly have imagined that in the future there would be a dispute over delimitation and it could become a weapon for division in the country. After delimitation, the existing 543 seats can be increased to 816, out of which 33 percent i.e. 273 seats will be reserved for women.
Southern states are protesting
Some states of South India including Tamil Nadu are opposing the delimitation. These states say that if the number of Lok Sabha seats is decided on the basis of population, they will suffer losses because they have effectively implemented population control policies. He believes that in a way it would be tantamount to punishing for good work. On the other hand, population in the states of North India has increased rapidly and these states will benefit on the front of political representation.

Delimitation has happened four times so far
Till now, delimitation has taken place in India four times in 1952, 1963, 1973 and 2002 respectively. Till 1976, after every census, the seats of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and state assemblies were decided afresh.
During the Emergency in 1976, Indira Gandhi’s government froze the allocation of seats so that states that had effectively implemented family planning policies did not suffer a loss on the representation front. This decision was implemented through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment.
This amendment prevented changes in the number of parliamentary and assembly seats until the 2001 census. The boundaries of the constituencies were redrawn in 2001, but there was no change in the total number of seats.
