Tsunami Alert: A strong earthquake of 7.6 magnitude occurred on Tuesday near Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean. The quake struck Tuesday evening local time at a depth of about 237 kilometers (148 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors of earthquakes occurring at shallow depth are felt more strongly on the surface.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at sea, 153 kilometers (95 miles) west of Neiafu, the island nation’s second-largest city. At present there is no news of any kind of damage. Tonga’s National Disaster Risk Management Office has warned all people living in the low-lying island nation to immediately move to higher ground or into the country’s interior.
A post on the office’s Facebook page said people should stay away from beaches, shores and low-lying coastal areas until it is declared completely safe. The USGS has not issued any immediate tsunami warning for the area.
Tonga is an archipelago located in Polynesia, consisting of 171 islands and a population of just over 100,000; Most of these people live on the main island of Tongatapu. Tuesday’s earthquake was centered closer to the Vava’u island group.
This island country is located about 1,800 kilometers (1,100 mi) north-east of New Zealand and falls on the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’. It is an arc of seismic faults where most of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic activity occur. In the year 2022, three people were killed in the tsunami caused by the volcanic eruption.
