New feature launched in BHIM App: Now UPI payments up to Rs 5,000 will be done through biometrics

New Delhi, 24 March. NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), on Tuesday launched a new biometric authentication feature for UPI payments in the BHIM Payments app. Through this new feature, users will now be able to approve transactions up to Rs 5,000 using their smartphone’s fingerprint or face recognition, making payments faster and easier than before.

With this feature, users will not need to enter UPI PIN every time for small transactions. This will also reduce failed payments due to incorrect PIN entry or forgetting the PIN and will improve the user experience. This biometric feature can be used for common transactions like sending money to friends and family, scanning QR codes of shopkeepers and making online payments.

On this new feature, NBSL MD and CEO Lalita Nataraj said that the objective of this app is to make digital payments easy, secure and accessible to everyone. He said that with biometric authentication, everyday payments will become easier and security will also be maintained. He also said that confirming transactions through fingerprint or face will reduce the dependence on PIN and the payment will be directly linked to the user, thereby strengthening security.

Still available for transactions above Rs 5,000 UPI PIN mandatory

This new feature also enhances security as fingerprint and face data remain stored on the user’s device, reducing the risk of PIN sharing or misuse. However, for transactions above Rs 5,000, users will still have to enter the UPI PIN, which will provide additional security for larger payments. Currently, this feature is available on those Android and iOS devices which have the facility of fingerprint or face recognition.
