You will be able to talk even on ‘No Signal’, Airtel-Starlink did this amazing thing
Desk: Airtel Africa, in partnership with SpaceX, has announced the successful testing of data and messaging services using Starlink Mobile. The focus of the trial was to provide connectivity in those areas where there was no signal of terrestrial mobile network. This partnership between the two companies is an important step towards increasing coverage beyond the traditional network infrastructure.
According to Airtel Africa, standard 4G smartphones were able to connect smoothly to Starlink’s satellite constellation during testing. More than 650 satellites helped bridge the gap in connectivity in areas where traditional mobile networks would typically be difficult to serve. The company said that this testing showed how connectivity can be increased even in zero coverage areas, without relying on ground-based network infrastructure.
During the trial, customers were able to access Lite Data applications. This included WhatsApp calling and messaging through platforms like Facebook Messenger. Users were also able to do financial transactions using the Airtel app. This showed that essential communication and digital services can continue to work even in areas where there is no mobile network signal.
Airtel Africa said it is using the information gained from this successful testing phase to prepare to expand service in 14 markets. However, any rollout will depend on regulatory approval by country. The company said that this effort is part of a larger focus to ensure that customers can remain connected wherever they are. Will this kind of service come to India also? At present Airtel has not given any answer in this regard.
