Ranveer Singh to apologise, visit Chamundi Hill: HC

Bengaluru: Ranveer Singh has informed the Karnataka High Court that he will file an affidavit apologising and visit Chamundi Hill, in connection with a case over alleged remarks on a divine character from Kantara Chapter 1.

FIR over remarks at award event

The actor is facing a complaint and FIR for allegedly referring to ‘Chavundi Daiva’, a revered deity of coastal Karnataka, as a ghost during a Filmfare Awards event held in Goa last year.

The complaint, filed by a lawyer, stated that the remarks hurt religious sentiments, leading to legal action against the actor.

Plea to quash FIR

Ranveer Singh had approached the High Court seeking to quash the FIR. During the hearing, his counsel, senior advocate Sajan Poovayya, informed the court that the actor was willing to take corrective steps.

“We will file an affidavit apologising. We will also visit Chamundi Hill,” the counsel submitted before the bench.

Court stresses responsibility of public figures

A single-judge bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna observed that the remarks made by the actor were inappropriate and highlighted the responsibility of public figures.

The court noted that celebrities have a strong influence on society and must exercise caution in their statements. It also emphasised the need for genuine remorse in such cases.

Complainant seeks stronger apology

Counsel for the complainant argued that the proposed apology may not be sufficient, terming it “insincere”. He suggested that the actor should issue a personal apology and visit the temple to express regret directly.

The court, however, indicated that an apology along with corrective actions, such as visiting the temple, could help address the issue.

Matter adjourned

The High Court has adjourned the matter to April 10 for further hearing, during which the court is expected to review the affidavit and subsequent actions taken by the actor.

Conclusion

The case highlights the legal and social scrutiny faced by public figures over remarks related to religious sentiments. The outcome of the hearing will determine whether the apology and proposed actions are sufficient to resolve the matter.
