New Delhi: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured that India has sufficient fuel supplies for nearly two months, urging citizens not to panic amid ongoing tensions in West Asia and rumours of shortages.
In an official statement released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the government said crude oil imports have already been secured for the next 60 days, ensuring uninterrupted availability of petrol, diesel and LPG across the country.
No supply gap, says government
Officials confirmed that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have proactively tied up imports in advance, eliminating any risk of immediate supply disruption.
Despite concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, India continues to receive crude oil from more than 40 global suppliers. Increased availability from alternate sources has helped offset any disruption caused by geopolitical tensions.
Refineries across the country are currently operating at over 100 per cent capacity, maintaining a steady flow of fuel.
Strong reserves ensure stability
India’s total fuel reserve capacity stands at around 74 days, while current available stock is estimated at nearly 60 days. This includes crude oil, refined petroleum products, and strategic reserves stored in underground facilities.
Even as the West Asia crisis enters its fourth week, officials said the country remains well-prepared to meet demand without any shortages.
The government emphasised that there is no scarcity of petrol, diesel or LPG anywhere in India. Fuel stations are functioning normally, and there is no rationing in place.
LPG supply strengthened
Domestic LPG production has increased significantly and now meets more than half of the country’s daily demand, reducing reliance on imports.
At the same time, additional LPG shipments from countries such as the United States, Russia and Australia are already en route, further strengthening supply.
Oil companies have continued smooth delivery of cylinders nationwide, and demand has stabilised after a brief surge triggered by panic buying.
PNG expansion part of long-term plan
The government clarified that the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is not a response to any immediate crisis. Instead, it is part of a long-term strategy to promote cleaner and more affordable energy solutions.
PNG connections have seen steady growth across urban and semi-urban areas, with authorities encouraging households to adopt the alternative.
Warning against misinformation
The ministry has cautioned against the spread of misinformation on social media, which has led to unnecessary panic among the public.
Officials noted that some posts have used misleading visuals and false claims about fuel shortages, prompting avoidable rush at petrol pumps.
Citizens have been advised to rely only on official communication channels for accurate information. The government also warned that strict action may be taken against those spreading rumours that could disrupt public confidence.
