In Madaripur district, a speeding bus went out of control, broke the railing and fell straight into the Padma River. So far, 23 people have been confirmed dead in this horrific accident, while dozens of people are seriously injured. The team of divers and local administration is busy searching for life under water, but the death toll is expected to increase further. Speeding and carelessness took the lives of innocent people. According to eyewitnesses, this accident happened in the morning when a bus of ‘Imad Transport’ was going from Khulna towards Dhaka. The speed of the bus in Qutubpur area was so high that the driver lost control at the turn. The bus broke the security cover of the bridge like a straw and plunged straight into the deep water of the river. After the fall, half of the bus got submerged in water, due to which the passengers did not even get a chance to get out. Rescue work was done amidst screams, the bus was taken out with a crane. There was chaos on the spot immediately after the accident. Local fishermen and villagers were the first to start rescue operations and rescue the injured who were peeking out of the windows. As soon as the information was received, teams of fire department and police arrived with heavy cranes. After hours of hard work the bus could be pulled out of the water. Officials said that even the rescue workers were shocked to see the scene that unfolded from inside the bus; Many people were left stranded between the seats. Experts say that the arbitrariness and ignorance of rules by drivers on the feeder roads around Padma Bridge is costing the lives of innocent people. Police have ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter and efforts are being made to find out whether there was a technical fault in the bus or the driver’s drowsiness caused the disastrous accident.
