In Madaripur district, a speeding bus went out of control, broke the railing and fell straight into the Padma River. So far, 23 people have been confirmed dead in this horrific accident, while dozens of people are seriously injured. According to eyewitnesses, this accident happened in the morning when a bus of ‘Imad Transport’ was going from Khulna towards Dhaka. The speed of the bus in Qutubpur area was so high that the driver lost control at the turn. The bus broke the security cover of the bridge like a straw and plunged straight into the deep water of the river. After the fall, half of the bus got submerged in water, due to which the passengers did not even get a chance to get out. Rescue work was done amidst screams, the bus was taken out with a crane. There was chaos on the spot immediately after the accident. Local fishermen and villagers were the first to start rescue operations and rescue the injured who were peeking out of the windows. As soon as the information was received, teams of fire department and police arrived with heavy cranes. After hours of hard work the bus could be pulled out of the water. Police have ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter and efforts are being made to find out whether there was a technical fault in the bus or the driver’s drowsiness caused the disastrous accident.
