Concerns Grow Over Child Safety on Roblox as Developer Questions Effectiveness of Safeguards
An independent developer associated with Roblox has raised fresh concerns about the effectiveness of the platform’s safety measures, particularly when it comes to protecting younger users. Despite recent updates such as mandatory age verification systems, the developer believes the current safeguards fall short of addressing real risks faced by children.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, the developer—who chose to remain anonymous and is referred to as “Sam”—emphasized the need for constant parental involvement. According to him, the responsibility for ensuring children’s safety cannot rest solely on the platform’s systems.
He stressed that children using Roblox require continuous supervision, suggesting that parents should carefully evaluate whether their children should be allowed access if such monitoring is not feasible.
A Platform Dominated by Young Users
Roblox has established itself as one of the most influential gaming ecosystems in the world, particularly among children. In the United Kingdom, it remains especially popular with users between the ages of eight and 12. Globally, the platform recorded an average of over 80 million daily active users in 2024, with nearly 40% of them under the age of 13.
Unlike traditional video games, Roblox functions as a user-driven platform where players can design, publish, and play games created by others. This open structure has contributed to its rapid growth, but it has also raised concerns about content moderation and user interactions.
Creators on the platform can earn revenue through various methods, including in-game purchases, advertisements, and participation in Roblox’s creator incentive programs. Sam himself is part of this ecosystem, generating income from his creations while also volunteering with an online safety organization.
Drawing from his experience, he suggested that the platform’s public image of safety does not fully reflect the reality encountered by some users.
Reports of Harmful Interactions and Content
A major concern raised by the developer involves how children interact with others on the platform. Roblox allows players to communicate and collaborate within games, which can enhance the experience but also introduces potential risks.
Sam pointed to instances where users were allegedly encouraged to move conversations outside the platform, a practice that violates Roblox’s rules. Such behavior can make it more difficult for moderation systems to detect inappropriate interactions.
In addition to communication risks, he highlighted concerns about certain user-generated games. While Roblox requires developers to label content based on age suitability, Sam claimed that some games still manage to include themes that may not be appropriate for younger audiences. These reportedly include violent scenarios or content inspired by real-world events.
Although Roblox provides reporting tools for users to flag problematic content, Sam indicated that enforcement may not always be consistent. He suggested that only a portion of reported issues lead to meaningful action, raising questions about the effectiveness of moderation processes at scale.
Roblox Reaffirms Commitment to Safety
In response to ongoing criticism, Roblox has maintained that user safety is central to its operations. The company has implemented a range of safety features designed to limit harmful interactions and ensure a safer environment for younger users.
One of the key measures is its age verification system, which was introduced in the UK in early 2026 and later expanded globally. The system, reviewed by independent experts, is intended to ensure that users interact primarily with others in similar age groups.
Roblox also uses automated systems to monitor user behavior. If a user’s activity appears inconsistent with their verified age, the platform may require them to repeat the verification process. These mechanisms are part of broader efforts to identify and address suspicious behavior.
The company has also introduced restrictions aimed at preventing direct communication between children and significantly older users, alongside filters designed to block inappropriate language and content.
Longstanding Debate Around Platform Responsibility
Concerns about child safety on Roblox are not new. Over the years, critics have repeatedly pointed out that the platform’s open, user-generated model can make it difficult to fully control what users experience.
Because anyone can create and publish games, ensuring that all content meets appropriate standards remains a complex challenge. While Roblox has taken steps to improve moderation and safety features, some experts argue that these efforts have yet to fully address the scale of the issue.
The debate often centers on where responsibility lies. While platforms are expected to implement robust safeguards, there is also a growing emphasis on the role of parents in guiding and monitoring their children’s online activities.
Roblox co-founder and CEO Dave Baszucki has previously acknowledged this balance, encouraging parents to make informed decisions about their children’s use of the platform based on their own comfort levels.
Increasing Global Scrutiny and Regulation
As concerns persist, governments around the world are taking a closer look at platforms like Roblox. Some countries have already imposed strict measures in response to safety issues.
Russia and Turkey have banned the platform, citing risks to children. Indonesia has also introduced restrictions, placing Roblox on a list of platforms prohibited for users under 16, with enforcement scheduled to begin on 28 March.
Elsewhere, regulatory discussions are still ongoing. In Australia, new rules limiting social media access for under-16s have been introduced, although Roblox has not yet been included. However, advocacy groups continue to push for broader restrictions.
In the United Kingdom, authorities are exploring additional steps to enhance online safety for minors. Proposed measures include limiting screen time, introducing curfews for app usage, and potentially restricting access to certain platforms.
It remains unclear whether Roblox will be directly affected by any future UK regulations, as officials have not yet specified which platforms would fall under such rules.
