RCB eyes defending the title, CSK, KKR and Mumbai also strong contenders
Will keep an eye on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and young players
Bengaluru. Reigning champions Royal Challengers Bangalore will be looking to defend their title in the IPL starting on Saturday while Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians will be looking to regain their lost glory. In the next two months in the IPL, along with veteran players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, we will also keep an eye on some young players who will leave no stone unturned in leaving their mark by performing well.
RCB will host Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in the tournament opener and will be aiming for a great start. RCB will have to play without Josh Hazlewood and left-arm fast bowler Yash Dayal. Both played important roles in the victorious 2025 campaign, but due to various reasons, they will be out of most of the matches this year. Hazlewood is trying to recover from injury in Australia and become fully fit and he may join the team later. Dayal, who is facing sexual harassment allegations, will remain out of the entire session.
RCB will have to rely heavily on experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, spinner Krunal Pandya, Suyyash Sharma and left-arm fast bowler Mangesh Yadav. Sunrisers captain Pat Cummins will also not be in the team in the initial phase. Ishan Kishan has been made the acting captain. Sunrisers’ backup options do not look very reliable. Braydon Carse, Jaydev Unadkat, Harshal Patel and Harsh Dubey may face a tough challenge on flat pitches. Both teams would like to compensate for their bowling weakness with batting.
RCB has batsmen like Virat Kohli, Tim David, Phil Salt, Jacob Bethel, captain Rajat Patidar, Romario Shepherd, while Sunrisers also have strong batsmen in the form of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen. Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders have a combined total of 13 IPL titles. But the last season was not good for him.
The Mumbai team reached the playoffs last season by finishing fourth. This five-time champion team will try to improve its performance. KKR and CSK were ranked eighth and tenth. He has made a lot of changes in his teams. CSK has included former Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson in the team and has also included Matt Henry and Noor Ahmed in the team.
CSK team will be expecting a great performance for the last time from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has remained doubtful about his future in IPL. KKR has strengthened its batting by including Tim Seifert, Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra and Cameron Green.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane will play the role of keeping the team together at the top and vice-captain Rinku Singh will have to adapt to the role of finisher that Andre Russell played from 2014 till his retirement last year. In bowling, they have two trump cards in Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, but their fast bowling department is weak. Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans will look to add another title to their name, while Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings and Lucknow Supergiants will be looking to win their first title.
Kohli and Rohit will also be in focus in this IPL. These two don’t need to prove anything but like always, they will try to live up to the expectations of the audience. Kohli added another trophy to his illustrious record last year with RCB’s maiden IPL title win. It will be interesting to see whether this player is successful in repeating his previous performance or not. Kohli’s challenge will be from himself also. He has got plenty of rest after the home ODI series against New Zealand in January.
Rohit also played his last competitive match against New Zealand. As a batsman, he has not performed as expected in the IPL. The best performance of this 38-year-old player in a single season is 538 runs. He would like to improve his record and would also like to play an important role in helping Mumbai win its sixth title.
Like previous competitions, this time too many players who have not played any international match yet will try to make their impact. These players include Auqib Nabi of Delhi Capitals, Karthik Sharma of Rajasthan Royals, Prashant Veer of CSK etc.
