Congress will not have to vacate the bungalows of ’24 Akbar Road’ and ‘5 Raisina Road’, gets big relief

New Delhi: Now Congress Party will not have to vacate the bungalow at ’24 Akbar Road’ tomorrow. The Congress party has also got this immediate relief regarding the bungalow of Youth Congress office i.e. ‘5 Raisina Road’. Earlier, Congress was given notice to vacate ’24 Akbar Road’ and ‘5 Raisina Road Bungalow’ by March 28, but now relief has been received from the concerned department of the Central Government. However, in view of the upcoming assembly elections in 5 states, it is being said to be a political move of the government. Assembly elections are going to be held in 5 states in India, which include West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The estate department had given a notice to the Congress party, asking it to vacate the bungalow. Apart from this, the party was also asked to vacate the Indian Youth Congress office located at 5, Raisina Road. Congress has said that this is an attempt by the government to ‘suppress the voice’ of the party. Let us tell you that the Congress Party has already shifted its office to ‘Indira Bhawan’ on Kotla Marg. The party had inaugurated its new headquarters ‘Indira Bhawan’ on Kotla Marg last year. Even after shifting to the new office, Congress did not vacate the Akbar Road premises.

Long history of the bungalow located at 24, Akbar Road

When Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the new headquarters last year, several senior leaders acknowledged their deep emotional connect with the Akbar Road office and noted its importance in the party’s political journey. However, this bungalow at 24, Akbar Road has a long and multifaceted history in itself. During the British period, it was the residence of Sir Reginald Maxwell, a member of the Executive Council of Viceroy Lord Linlithgow. In the early 1960s, the property was the residence of Khin Kyi, Myanmar’s ambassador to India. His daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, who was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, spent many years living in this house.

Why is 24, Akbar Road Bungalow special for Congress?

However, the most important period in the bungalow’s history began in the late 1970s. Following the defeat of the Congress Party in the 1977 general elections and the subsequent split within the party, Indira Gandhi led a breakaway faction that needed a new base from which to operate. Rajya Sabha MP G. Venkataswami, who was a close associate of Indira Gandhi. For this purpose he offered his house situated on Akbar Road. From that time, this bungalow became synonymous with the return of the Congress Party and its political journey. It continued to serve as the party headquarters even during the tenure of Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. Over the years the complex was expanded to meet the growing organizational needs of the party, until finally the Congress built its new headquarters on Kotla Marg.
