Congress gets big relief, will not have to vacate 24 Akbar Road Bungalow
The country’s oldest party, Congress, which has been continuously attacking the Centre, has now got a big relief from the government. Congress was given notice to vacate the bungalow located at 24, Akbar Road, Delhi by March 28, but now the party will not have to vacate this bungalow. Whereas earlier a notice to vacate the bungalow was given by the Land and Development Office (L&DO) of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
On behalf of the Congress, it was told that the Center had sent the notice regarding vacating the 2 bungalows on March 13 and the party was asked to vacate its office at 24 Akbar Road as well as the Indian Youth Congress office at 5 Raisina Road by Saturday (March 28). Congress was not happy with this notice and was planning to go to court against the notice related to eviction of the bungalow.
Congress office since the time of Indira Gandhi
Earlier, the notice from the Center had created a stir in the party because 24, Akbar Road had remained as the Congress office since the era of Indira Gandhi. This office has been a witness to the glorious journey of Congress and many historic decisions and developments.
However, Congress has shifted to its new and luxurious office. In January last year, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi had inaugurated the party’s new headquarters Indira Bhawan in New Delhi. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, party general secretary KC Venugopal and many other senior party leaders were also present in this ceremony.
Congress’s new office named ‘Indira Bhawan’
Sources associated with the Center said that this notice was given under a 2006 policy of the Land and Development Office (L&DO) of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). According to this policy, any national level political party can be allotted land to build its office. If they accept this allotment, then within the next 3 years from the date of taking possession of the land, they have to vacate all the bungalows or other premises which were allotted to them earlier.
Congress had started construction work in 2009 to build its new office on the plot allotted on Deendayal Upadhyay (DDU) Marg. This office named Indira Bhawan was completed last year in 2025. Even after the construction of the new headquarters, the Congress continued to occupy both 24, Akbar Road (which has been the party headquarters since 1978) and Raisina Road.
After independence this bungalow became Burma House
24, Akbar Road Bungalow has been the headquarters of Congress since 1978. Then this bungalow was allotted in the name of Andhra MP G Venkat Swamy. Later it became the headquarters of Congress. This bungalow is also adjacent to Sonia Gandhi’s residence 10, Janpath. There is a gate between these two bungalows, due to which Sonia could reach the party headquarters at any time.
When Sir Edwin Lutyens was entrusted with the task of developing New Delhi, he built many bungalows here in this area of 28 square kilometers between 1911 and 1925. Before independence, this bungalow was given to British military officer Sir Reginald Maxwell. But after independence, in 1960, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave permission to make it Burma House (the house of the Myanmar ambassador).
