UN Secretary-General Election: Maldives withdrew nomination for the post of United Nations Secretary General, now the number of candidates also reduced from five to three.
UN Secretary-General Election: United Nations – The Maldives have withdrawn their unexpected nomination of Virginia Gamba for the post of Secretary-General, and Chile has withdrawn its nomination of Michelle Bachelet, according to La Nice Collins, spokeswoman for the President of the General Assembly. After this decision of both the countries, now only one female candidate is left in the election field, Costa Rica’s chief economist Rebecca Grynspan. This also reduces the number of candidates from five to three, the other two of whom are men.

Gamba’s nomination by the Maldives was a surprise as the Argentinian national was not known to have any special ties to the South Asian archipelago.
Argentina’s Rafael Grossi is currently contesting the elections and has the full support of his country. Despite Chile’s withdrawal, Michelle Bachelet remains a candidate with the support of Brazil and Mexico. Bachelet has been the former President of Chile and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, due to which she has had differences with many countries.
In America, Chuck Edwards has opposed his candidacy and said that some members of the US Parliament are preparing letters against him. He cited Michelle Bachelet’s criticism of human rights in America and Israel as the reason for this.
As a permanent member of the Security Council, the US could veto his election, thereby neutralizing the support of Brazil and Mexico. Another candidate in the election is Macky Sall, who has received the support of Burundi.

If no other strong female candidate emerges, Costa Rica’s Greenspan may get the edge, as pressure to elect a female secretary general this time around is increasing.
The deadline for nominations is Wednesday and from April 20, candidates will have interactive sessions in which they will present their plans and answer questions.
Although the winner is decided by a simple majority in the General Assembly, the real decision is made by the Security Council, because according to the UN Charter, the General Assembly appoints the Secretary-General only on the recommendation of the Security Council.
